We uphold the rights of the elderly to live safely, to be respected and heard. We work closely with people who have been impacted by sexual assault and/or family violence. Other forms of abuse are financial (the most common form of elder abuse in Australia), physical, social, or psychological. In a 2016 report the Australian Institute of Family Studies estimated that between 2 and 10 percent of older Australians experience abuse in any given year.
It was also noted in the report that this issue is under reported and that the rate of neglect and abuse is likely even higher. Elder abuse typically occurs in families and perpetrators are mostly adult children but other offenders may include, friends, neighbours, in-law children, care workers and spouses.
If you or someone you know has suffered sexual assault and/or family violence, they can contact us and request counselling Geelong (03) 5222 4318 /admin@barwoncasa.org or Wimmera (03) 5381 1211 / wimmera@barwoncasa.org
