Everyone has the right to be safe, equal and respected. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness of sexual violence and the harm it causes, highlight the support available to victim survivors and their loved ones, and call for the change needed to build a world free from sexual violence.
The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre is inviting the community to attend a free screening of the powerful documentary Left Write Hook as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April. The screening will be followed by a live panel discussion with documentary makers and sector leaders, creating an opportunity for community members and professionals to deepen their understanding of sexual violence, survivor recovery, and prevention.
The screening will take place on:
Date: Wednesday 29 April 2026
Time: 12:30pm – 3:30pm
Location: Auditorium, Federation University Horsham
Registrations: https://events.humanitix.com/horsham-sexual-assault-awareness-month
The documentary Left Write Hook follows a group of survivors participating in a unique recovery program that combines trauma-aware creative writing with non-contact boxing. Created by survivors, the program supports participants to reconnect with their bodies, reclaim their voices, and rebuild strength, confidence, and community.
The film has received national recognition, including Best Feature Documentary at the Australian International Documentary Conference and the Audience Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and offers a powerful and hopeful exploration of survivor-led healing.
Kerriann Campbell-Jones, CEO of The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre, said Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an important opportunity for communities to come together and confront the reality of sexual violence.
“Sexual violence is harmful, pervasive and preventable. It is a societal injustice often driven by inequality and the misuse of power and control, and addressing it requires a whole-of-community response.”
“Sexual Assault Awareness Month reminds us of our shared responsibility to create communities where sexual violence is no longer tolerated or ignored. When we have open and honest conversations, we build awareness, reduce stigma, and strengthen our ability as a community to prevent harm and support those impacted.”
“Left Write Hook highlights the complex and often non-linear journey of recovery for survivors and shows the incredible power of peer support, creativity, and trauma-informed practice in helping people reconnect with their bodies and reclaim their voices”
“It takes a whole community to end sexual violence and support recovery. This free screening provides a valuable opportunity for community members, professionals, and organisations to come together, learn, and be part of the urgent change we need to see.”
Ms Campbell-Jones said improving community understanding and responses to sexual violence is critical to ensuring survivors feel safe to speak out and access support.
“We know that negative responses to sexual assault disclosure can silence survivors and prevent them from seeking help. By normalising conversations about sexual violence and strengthening our systems and community responses, we can reduce shame, increase support, and ensure people receive the care and justice they deserve.”
